The first Gondwana kit was invented by two creative geniuses on their kitchen table in 1990. This Paper Making Kit was packaged very simply - it had one-colour instructions and was packed in a plastic bag.
The response to these first kits was fantastic - it seemed that people loved the idea of being creative and helping the environment at the same time.
They quit their "day jobs" and began their Gondwana adventure full time. Gondwana was later transferred to people who worked with them. We now have 19 products in the range and are constantly evolving our kits - by dropping some kits, revamping some and inventing new ones. We try to keep Gondwana fresh and inspiring (for us and you!).

The long, scientific answer The "Gond" in Gondwana comes from the name of an ancient tribe from Central India (the Gonds).
In the late 1800’s scientists found rocks where the Gonds lived that matched samples found in the Falkland Islands (near Argentina). This led to the theory that the southern continents were once joined, and had drifted apart over millions of years.
This ancient "super continent" made up of India, Africa, South America, Australia, Antarctica and New Zealand was named Gondwanaland.
The short, philosophical answer: Just as the continent evolved from Gondwanaland to the continents and countries that we know today, so for many people Gondwana kits represent a gift of discovery and the beginning of a creative journey that helps shape our personality and skills that build confidence and self esteem. We believe that the desire to feel creative is common to all people!
We hope our kits will help the world become a more creative place!

We spend time trying to spot trends by browsing through magazines and in shops (it’s a tough job but someone has to do it!).
Sometimes we see a great gift that we’d love in our house - we then try to work out if we could make it. If we can, we then see if this idea could be transformed into a kit.
We also get lots of fantastic kit ideas from Gondwana fans that write to us and offer suggestions.

Our kits are designed and made in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Dunedin is a southern city known for it’s university, the wildlife that lives nearby (penguins and albatrosses) and it’s passion for rugby. It’s also a haven for artists - many of New Zealand’s most respected artists and writers seem to live (or have lived) around Dunedin.

All the packaging and paper we print on is recycled. We also try to recycle as much waste as we can from our factory and office.

We appreciate that if you’re asking this question you’ve had a great time with a Gondwana kit and want to carry on. We’d love to be able to help but, in practical terms, it’s beyond us at this stage.
Many retailers who sell our kits also sell art & craft products and usually a similar component can be purchased from them.
We hope this won’t stop your creative juices flowing and that you can find or make the component you’re in search of!

Yes but usually we would prefer you to buy from our retailers or mail order companies. They have distribution expertise and it is usually cheaper for you to deal with a retailer in your own country or area. Orders that we receive may in the first instance be referred to local retailers and direct marketing companies for fulfilment. You will be advised and be asked to agree on the best method for you to receive your order.
